Austin Dillon passed an out-of-fuel Jimmie Johnson in the final two laps and won a rain-delayed Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina on Sunday night.

Four-time race winner Johnson was comfortably ahead over the final 20 laps, but he ran out of fuel on lap 398, allowing Dillon to zoom past him and claim his first career NASCAR win.

A fast-moving rainstorm forced an hour and 40 minute delay of the race after 143 of the 400 laps. Dillon and his pit crew celebrated the victory with a belly slide across the infield grass of the racetrack.

Coupled with the delay, the length of the race helped push the end of the event to well past midnight on the East Coast.

Kyle Busch finished second, with Martin Truex Jr., Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin rounding out the top five. Johnson finished 17th.

Busch won the first stage of the race, with Truex taking the second and Denny Hamlin capturing the third. Truex led a race-high 233 laps on Sunday.

NASCAR’s Monster Energy Series continues next Sunday at Dover International Speedway in Delaware.
