MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) – Tyler Sheehy, who leads the Big Ten Conference in scoring after one week of play -- has been named the Big Ten First Star of the Week following the No. 8/9 Gopher Hockey program’s two-win weekend in Alaska.

A native of Burnsville, Minn., Sheehy totaled a league-best five points over the weekend (two goals, three assists), factored into both game winners and matched his career single-game bests for points, assists and goals.

The sophomore tallied three assists in Minnesota’s 6-0 victory over Alaska Anchorage on Friday night to open the season and then scored a pair of goals in Sunday’s 6-3 win over Alaska Fairbanks. Sheehy kicked off Sunday’s win with a short-handed goal – one of two in the game by the Maroon & Gold – and added an empty-net tally to seal the win.

This is the second time Sheehy has earned Big Ten weekly honors – he was also named the league’s First Star of the Week on Dec. 8, 2015.

The Maroon & Gold return to action with an exhibition game against the U.S. Under-18 Team at Mariucci Arena on Oct. 14 before the official regular-season home opener against St. Cloud State on Oct. 21. Tickets for this year’s Gopher Hockey campaign can be purchased through MyGopherSports.com, by visiting the Mariucci Arena Ticket Office or by calling 1-800-U-Gopher.
