Former Minnesota Chill Assistant Named Stanford’s Head Volleyball Coach

On Monday (January 30), Kevin Hambly, who served as the Rochester-based Minnesota Chill’s assistant coach, was named Stanford University‘s Director of Volleyball. It may be hard to believe but February marks the 15th year anniversary of the Minnesota Chill’s lone season of existence. It was a season that provided a lot of fun and excitement for Rochester-area volleyball fans and ended with the Chill claiming the only-ever United States Professional Volleyball title.

Anyone who has kept up with any of the former players and staff knows that many of them went on to continue their volleyball careers. A few went on to have very solid professional beach volleyball careers. A few others represented the United States at the Olympics. Now, one of the team’s coaches has landed a job as the head of the volleyball program at Stanford University.

Hambly spent the last eight seasons as the head women’s volleyball coach at the University of Illinois, leading them to the NCAA women’s volleyball title game in 2011 and compiling an impressive 178-86 record as coach for the Fighting Illini.

It’s great to see Hambly continue to do so well in the world of women’s volleyball. If only United States Professional Volleyball had done as well back in 2002-2003, we’d still be enjoying high level volleyball right here in Rochester…
