According to a news release issued by the Elk River Police Department, the victims were on a motorcycle that collided head-on with a pick-up truck driven by a 17-year-old boy in the far northwestern suburb shortly after 6 pm on Friday. The teenager suffered minor injuries, while the driver and passenger on the motorcycle were pronounced dead at the scene.

The Blaine Police Department later issued a statement on Facebook identifying the victims as Officer Steve Nanney and his wife, Susie. They were both 51-years-old and lived in Ham Lake.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of one of our finest:

Last night, Officer Steve Nanney and his wife Susie were killed in an off-duty motorcycle crash with another vehicle. Officer Nanney was a dedicated servant to our Community for over ten years. Most recently he was the School Resource Officer for the last three years at the Blaine High School, a job he loved. He was fortunate to be able to serve, mentor, and impact the youth in our Community. Steve’s wife Susie was an Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota. Susie was dedicated to the dietary health of children in promoting healthy lifestyles for hunger relief and school wellness. Steve was also very active in his work volunteering in multiple capacities for Special Olympics. Their compassion and kindness were well known in our Community.

We are asking for your support for the Nanney family, as well as our family at the Blaine Police Department. This will be a time of grief in our Blaine Community but we know we will get through this with you all together. Thank you.

Earlier, the State Patrol issued preliminary reports on two other motorcycle crashes in the Twin Cities that claimed the lives of at least 2 people. One of those crashes was in Brooklyn Center and also involved a man and woman from Ham Lake. Their names and the name of a third motorcyclist killed in a crash in Bloomington have not been released.
