Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) – Rochester Police say a 23-year-old man was last reported in critical condition at St. Mary’s Hospital after undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

Police Captain John Sherwin says the victim was shot during an altercation on 12th avenue southeast just south of 4th street around 5:30 p.m. While officers were responding to reports of a shooting at that site near St. Francis Catholic Church, it was learned the victim had been transported to the Emergency Room at St. Mary’s Hospital and was rushed into surgery.

Witnesses at the scene identified the shooting suspect as 22-year-old Gerardo Esquivel Olveda of Stewartville, and an Olmsted County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted him entering a residence at Stewarville mobile home park around 6 p.m. Law officers then surrounded the home, and after a brief standoff, Olveda was arrested and transported to the Olmsted County Jail.

Captain Sherwin says he is being held on suspicion of 2nd Degree Attempted Murder, Driveby Shooting and weapons related charges. The investigation is ongoing, but there not expected to be any additional arrests.
