MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) – Two wins from Eric Schierhorn including his first career shutout and a four-point weekend from Michael Brodzinski earned the pair of Gopher Hockey standouts recognition from the Big Ten Conference on Tuesday morning.

Schierhorn was named the Big Ten First Star of the Week while Brodzinski followed his goalie with the Big Ten Second Star of the Week. Penn State’s Chase Berger was named the Big Ten Third Star of the Week.

A freshman from Anchorage, Alaska, Schierhorn led all Big Ten goalies with a .941 save percentage, a 1.50 goals-against average and two victories this weekend in a sweep over Northeastern. The netminder made all 23 saves in Friday’s 4-0 win over the Huskies to pick up his first career win and first career shutout and then followed up the performance with a 25-save showing in Saturday’s 4-3 series-clinching victory. This week’s honor marks Schierhorn’s first career accolade from the Big Ten.

A junior from Ham Lake, Minn., Brodzinski paced all Big Ten defensemen and tied for second overall in the conference with four points over the weekend (one goal, three assists) including assists on both game-winning goals in a series sweep of Northeastern. After notching an assist in Friday’s shutout, the defensemen tallied a career-best three points (one goal, two assists) in the series finale on Saturday. Brodzinski now leads the Gophers and ranks first among all Big Ten defensemen with five points on the season (one goal, four assists). This week’s honor marks Brodzinski’s second career accolade from the Big Ten (Third Star on Nov. 26, 2013).

Following a bye next weekend, the Gophers return to action Nov. 6-7 with a two-game series at Notre Dame.
