After flying out of the gates to a 5-0 record this season, the Minnesota Vikings have hit the skids. The Vikings dropped their third straight game Sunday afternoon, losing a heart-breaker to the Detroit Lions 22-16 in overtime.

The loss came despite Sam Bradford throwing for 271 yards and a touchdown, and the Vikings finally getting a little bit going with their run game, finishing with 78 yards rushing on 25 carries. The offensive line also looked improved, allowing Bradford to only be sacked twice. But despite those positives, the game ended up negative for the purple.

The game went back and forth, with Detroit taking a 10-3 lead into halftime. The Vikings finally got a touchdown in the third quarter, but another Blair Walsh miss - this time on an extra point - kept Detroit in the lead at 10-9. That miss turned out to be a big one!

A Matt Prater field goal early in the fourth quarter extended Detroit's lead to 13-9. The Vikings thought they had snatched victory in regulation, scoring a touchdown with just 23 seconds left in the game to take a 16-13 lead. Detroit had other ideas, however, going 35 yards in four plays, with Prater kicking another field goal as time expired to tie the game at 16-16 and send it into overtime.

If Walsh had hit the extra point after the first Vikings touchdown of the game, Detroit would have needed a touchdown in those last few seconds instead of the field goal. However, the defense also shoulders some blame for letting Detroit get into field goal range so late in the game.

Detroit got the ball first in overtime and marched down the field on an impressive 87-yard drive that ended with Matthew Stafford hitting Golden Tate for a game-winning touchdown and a 22-16 victory.

Stafford passed for 219 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception, while running back Theo Riddick rushed for 70 yards on 14 carries. The win takes Detroit to 5-4 on the season, half a game behind the 5-3 Vikings.

The Vikings will look to end their three-game losing streak in Washington next Sunday, while Detroit is on their bye week. The two teams will meet again on Thanksgiving Day in Detroit.
