What’s the Most Popular Stolen Vehicle in Minnesota?

I used to drive a Honda. I guess I’m lucky I got home with it. The 1997 Honda Accord is the most commonly stolen vehicle in Minnesota, according to a national insurance report.

In 2016, the Accord ranked at the top of the Minnesota list with 620 thefts, and tops nationally as well. The 1998 Honda Civic was the second most popular car for thieves with 534 thefts. Full-sized Chevy (1999) and Ford (2001) pick-ups followed. The 1999 Toyota Camry rounded out the top five.

Minnesota trended toward the national rankings with the same top five, although the spots for the pick-ups on the two lists were flip-flopped. I have never owned a pick-up, but if that day comes, I’m keeping a real close eye on it.

The rest of the Minnesota top 10 included the 2000 Honda CR-V, 2005 Chevrolet Impala, 2005 Dodge Caravan, 2005 Toyota Corolla and 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. The national list differed with the Nissan Altima and Jeep Cherokee among the top 10.

The annual Hot Wheels report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau reports that later model smart-key vehicles reduce thefts. The bureau offers advice to avoid becoming the latest statistic. Lock your car and take your keys with you. That seems obvious enough. Although in the winter, many of us are tempted to break this rule. Install a warning device to detour thieves or a tracking device to help authorities after the fact are among other recommendations.

In a few states, including Texas, North Dakota and Montana, pick-ups are the most sought after vehicles. The Dodge Caravan is most stolen vehicle in Wisconsin.
