Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  There is no firm construction schedule at this point but the Rochester Public Works Dept. is recommending the first step be taken in its plan to rebuild another section of North Broadway.

The City Council Monday is scheduled to act on the department’s recommendation to award a nearly $630,000 bid for the design work associated with the proposed project.

According to the department:

The 2015 Broadway Corridor Study identified a proposed typical section that includes improved walking, biking, and transit facilities and transforms the roadway from a former highway into an urban street. This is in line with the city’s Complete Streets Policy.

The section under consideration for a complete rebuild extends from 14th St on the south to the Elton Hills Dr intersection on the north.

It includes traffic control lights at the 14th St and Elton Hills Dr intersections that are “proposed to be replaced.” The department says the 14th St intersection “is routinely identified as one of the most unsafe intersections for people who are biking, walking, and rolling.”

City Engineer Dillon Dombrovski says an evaluation of the 16th intersection will also be conducted.  He says possible changes that will be looked at include a median and traffic control light.

Dombrovski says construction on the overall project has to begin in 2024 because federal funding is involved.

The department intends to hold public input meetings as the planning process for the project moves ahead. The most recent cost estimate for design and construction was just under $11,000,000.

Work on another section of N. Broadway is scheduled to resume this year. The city rebuilt the roadway between Civic Center Dr. and 14th St last year. This year’s work will affect alleys and side streets in the construction zone.
