It seems like there has been a recent spike in homicides across the United States, according to a report from WalletHub. They looked at 45 of the biggest cities in the country and compared the number of homicides per capita in the last quarter of 2022 to the number of homicides during the same time frame in 2021 and 2020.

One of the reasons for this spike in homicides could be the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdowns and changes in work and school routines have caused a lot of stress, both mentally and physically, and financial strain for many people. Those who lost their jobs or had their hours reduced may have been living in poverty, which can be a major stressor.

A Deep Theory

Another theory, according to this study, is people who were already in violent or abusive homes may have been trapped in these situations with no way to escape. The sense of community and relationships may have been damaged as well, leading to a collective experience of trauma that has yet to be addressed.

As for Wisconsin, the report shows that Madison had one of the lowest rates of homicides among the cities listed, ranking 42nd. This means that Madison is relatively safe when compared to other cities in the United States. This could be due to a variety of factors such as strong law enforcement, community programs, and economic stability. Madison is an example of a city that has been successful in reducing its rate of homicides.
