Chicago Man Accused For Robbing Two Subways Demanding All The Bread

A man from Uptown in Chicago has been accused of robbing two Subway restaurants on Wednesday night.

Not His First Time

This happened only two weeks after being released on bail for a prior alleged burglary at a wireless store near his residence. However, his attempt to hold up one of the sandwich shops was botched as he demanded "all the bread" from the employee.

On a Thursday afternoon bail hearing, Judge Maryam Ahmad denied bail to 20-year-old Abail Bekele, who is facing charges of two robberies and an attempted robbery.

Cricket Wireless Robbery

During the early hours of April 26th, police found Bekele inside Cricket Wireless, with phone cases, broken dummy phones, and three identification cards belonging to other individuals in his pocket. He admitted to stealing the ID cards from Xsport in Lakeview.

He was charged with burglary, theft of lost or mislaid property, and identity theft and was ordered to pay a $500 bail deposit by Judge Charles Beach.

Subway Robberies

During Bekele's bail hearing yesterday, Assistant State's Attorney Domenica Devitt shared the events that led to his arrest. Two weeks prior, around 9:25 p.m. on a Wednesday, Bekele entered a Subway at 4436 North Broadway and demanded that the cashier give him all the money or he would shoot. Believing Bekele had a gun, the cashier complied and Bekele left with the cash.

Later that same night, just after 10 p.m., Bekele entered another Subway at 3952 North Sheridan and asked the cashier for the bread. When the employee asked for clarification, Bekele motioned toward his waist, leading the cashier to believe he had a gun. Bekele demanded all the money and when the cashier closed the register and ran to the back of the store, Bekele left without any money.

Bekele was arrested about 35 minutes later in the 3700 block of North Wayne. Devitt noted that he was wearing the same clothes seen in videos from the Subways. Just before Bekele was held without bail, his public defender mentioned that he had three job interviews scheduled at fast-food restaurants.
