MINNEAPOLIS (Gophersports.com)  - After a standout 2015 opening season weekend for the University of Minnesota women's soccer team, junior goalkeeper and Hugo, Minn. native Tarah Hobbs was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week by the Big Ten office Tuesday afternoon.

Hobbs tallied eight saves over the weekend as the Gophers move their 2015 record to 1-0-1 with a 3-0 victory over NDSU at Friday's home opener and held the No. 23-ranked Kansas Jayhawks to a 0-0 draw.

On Friday, Hobbs anchored a defense that only allowed three shots all match and then stymied a Kansas attack with seven saves, including three diving attempts. The junior went the full 110 minutes (2OT) to record her second straight shutout to begin the season.

As a freshman, Hobbs was named the 2013 Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year and was the first Gopher to receive this conference honor and earned the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week laurels twice (10/7/13 and 10/28/13). Last season, she tallied 96 saves including eight shutouts for the Gophers. She also notched back-to-back shutouts within the same weekend when the Gophers faced B1G foes Maryland and Rutgers (10/24/14 and 10/26/14).

The Maroon and Gold will begin their travel schedule this Friday as they travel to Baton Rougue, La. to take on Stephen F. Austin.
