The Minnesota State High School League put out a statement this morning on the investigation and incident caught on camera during last night's New Prague vs Hermantown hockey game. The gesture made behind the bench was one where the person takes their index finger and thumb together making a circle and then flipping it upside down. You can see a screengrab of the hand gesture below, it was captured by Twitter user @Lionel_Hutz_Esq

This is the third time this year that racially motivated comments in regards to New Prague fans have been made, the other two instances this year were in a hockey game against Saint Louis Park, and a basketball game against Robbinsdale Cooper.

According to NPR in 2019 the hand gesture typically associated as an 'OK' hand gesture was added as a form of hate gesture:

The "OK" hand gesture, commonly seen as a way of indicating that all is well, has now been classified as something else: a symbol of hate. On Thursday, the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish civil rights organization, added 36 symbols to its "Hate on Display" database including the index finger-to-thumb sign that in some corners of the Internet has become associated with white supremacy and the far right.

The student told those investigating the gesture that he was unaware of what the meaning of it was when he was making that gesture behind the bench.

Those defending the gesture as not being racist referred to a game that young men play where they make that symbol and put it below their waist and when someone looks at it, the looking party gets punched. That game is called the circle game.
