The minute the Thanksgiving leftovers were gone, many families across Minnesota locked down their Christmas tree, and for plenty of them, a real tree is the only way to celebrate the season.

Minnesota’s Real Christmas Tree Industry

Minnesota ranks 11th in the United States for Christmas tree growing. With more than 50 growers around the state harvesting over 500,000 trees each year, it has become a multi-million dollar industry. The state helps supply roughly 20 percent of Americans with their real Christmas trees.

Strong Supply And Better Pricing

For families who prefer a real tree, there is good news this year. According to the Real Christmas Tree Board, growers expect plenty of supply no matter when families choose to buy. They say 98 percent of people who bought a real tree last year found one they loved, which is a reassuring sign heading into the holidays.

The price may surprise shoppers, but in a good way. In a year when inflation has become part of everyday life, 84 percent of growers surveyed say they have no plans to raise prices, and some are even cutting them.

Tips For First-Time Real Tree Buyers

If you are getting a real tree this season or thinking about giving it a try, the experts offer some helpful advice. Measure the space where the tree will go, make sure you know your ceiling height, and ask the seller for a fresh cut at the base. Have them give the tree a shake to knock off loose needles and debris before you bring it home.

And whatever you do, do not forget to water it. A dry tree means a blizzard of needles, not to mention the infamous scene in Christmas Vacation when the whole thing goes up like a torch. A little care keeps your tree healthy, full, and far less flammable.
