It's like a guy can't waste gas for minor comfort anymore.

If leaving your car to idle while you make a run into the dollar store (be careful not to die in the store) for cheap snacks is your idea of freed'm, then you should stay out of the metro area. I've been told very loudly and frequently that you'll just get murdered there, anyway.

It's Illegal to Let Your Vehicle Idle in This Minnesota City

Don't worry: it's not St. Cloud. Our idlin' freed'm remains here. But if you leave your car running for more than three minutes in Minneapolis, you just might get fined $200.

But, but, but...what about those traffic jams? Are the Twin Cities raking in fines during drive times?

No:

  • If you're in traffic, you can leave your vehicle idling.
  • If the vehicle is occupied with a sleeper compartment, it can idle during sleep/rest
  • a passenger bus can idle while non-driver passengers (oxymoron?) are in it, but not for more than 15 minutes.

A bus, truck, or diesel-powered Hoss Machine can idle for up to five minutes per hour.

Never mind that it's bad for the engine and the environment.
