Olmsted County Sheriff’s Captain Malinda Olson said deputies responded to the fire fight at a property in the 11,600 block of County Rd. 11 Northeast, which is about five miles west of Elgin, shortly after 9:30 a.m. Firefighting crews from Plainview and Elgin were already at the scene extinguishing the fire when deputies arrived.

Olson said a deputy conducting traffic control was alerted that one of the residents had collapsed and was not breathing. The deputy administered CPR to the 77-year-old man.

He was revived and taken to St. Mary’s Hospital after paramedics used an AED. Olson did not have the official description of the man’s condition but did say he is “alive and well.” Authorities do not know why he collapsed but did say there was a lot of smoke at the fire scene.

Olson said the shed fire is suspected to have been caused by a lawn mower battery exploding. A dollar damage estimate was not available as of Friday morning, however the shed has been deemed a total loss.

Olson said the resuscitated man and 75-year-old woman who live at the property were home when the fire broke out.
