Man Convicted of Kidnapping That Ended at Cannon Falls Store

Cannon Falls, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Red Wing man today entered Alford pleas to a felony kidnapping charge and a felony count of fleeing police stemming from allegations that he held a woman against her will and led authorities on a high-speed chase in Goodhue County almost 2 years ago.

The Alford pleas mean 27-year-old Daquairus Nathaniel Black does not admit guilt, but acknowledges there is sufficient evidence to convict him. He entered the pleas just as his trial on those two charges, along with felony counts of illegal possession of a firearm and false imprisonment, was set to begin at the Goodhue County Courthouse.

According to the criminal complaint, Cannon Falls police were alerted to a reported abduction on the night of August 27, 2022. Employees at a local convenience store called 911 and reported that a woman had entered the business and told them repeatedly to call the police before she went into the women's restroom. While police were responding, they were told the suspect had left in a vehicle that Cannon Falls Police Chief Jeff McCormick spotted a short time later.

The court document says the driver of the vehicle sped away and during the chase in Cannon Falls, collided with the police chief's squad car. The collision sent both vehicles into the front yard of a residence, but the suspect vehicle managed to keep going and eventually entered northbound Highway 52 with Chief McCormick still in pursuit.

The criminal complaint says the Chief reached a top speed of 124 mph but was still not able to catch up with the suspect vehicle. Black was later apprehended in Faribault and the criminal charges say a search of his vehicle led to the discovery of the victim's purse and identification as well as a 9 mm pistol with two loaded magazines.

According to the court records, the victim told investigators she was in Minneapolis with her boyfriend to attend a concert with some friends. She reported that they had been drinking and she got into an argument with her boyfriend, who left their hotel room and she followed him without taking her cell phone.

The woman told investigators she got lost after walking a few blocks from the hotel and saw a vehicle parked along the street. Thinking it was a rideshare, she got into the vehicle and told the driver to take her to her parking ramp. Instead, she says Black drove her around the Twin Cities and demanded at she perform sexual acts on him while preventing her from escaping from the vehicle.

Eventually, she complained that she needed to use the bathroom and Black made the stop at the convenience store in Cannon Falls.

Black's sentencing hearing is scheduled in August.
