The Scott County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to the report of a single vehicle crash in Sand Creek Township, which borders the eastern side of the City of Jordan. The deadly crash was reported shortly before 8:45 p.m.

The crash report indicates a 17-year-old boy driving a Jeep on a gravel road lost control of the vehicle as it was navigating a sharp curve. The vehicle left the road and struck a power pole anchor cable causing it to flip over.

One of the passengers, described as a 16-year-old boy from Jordan, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies say he was not buckled at the time of the deadly crash.

The driver and two other occupants, described as a 16-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy both from Jordan, suffered what are being described as non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities say they were buckled up.

Last night's tragic car crash, claiming the life of a young passenger who was not wearing a seatbelt, is a painful reminder of the importance of this simple safety measure,” said Sheriff Luke Hennen in a press release issued Friday.  “As we enter the summer season with increased activity and more drivers on the road, especially during the Memorial Day weekend filled with celebrations and high school graduation festivities, it is crucial that we exercise caution and prioritize safety. I urge parents to have open and honest conversations with their teens about the importance of driving safely and always wearing seatbelts. Let's work together to prevent such tragedies and ensure the well-being of our young drivers and passengers on our roads.

Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved in the deadly crash. Officials say the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the crash victim and determine his cause of death.
