Rochester in Crosshairs of Major Winter Storm
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- Forecasters are tracking a major winter storm that has its sights set on Rochester and the surrounding communities.
A Winter Storm Watch begins in Rochester late Wednesday night and is scheduled to last through Saturday morning. The watch issued Monday afternoon says the storm is predicted to bring heavy snow accumulations and strong winds capable of creating blizzard or whiteout conditions.
Predicted snowfall amounts for the watch area are between four and six inches. The National Weather Service in La Crosse says Rochester could see 5-10 inches.
Forecasters also say the snowfall will be followed by a blast of arctic air that could create dangerously cold wind chills as cold as -33 in Rochester following the snow. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes, the watch says.
Officials say the potential for accumulating and blowing snow could make travel difficult starting Wednesday evening. The watch advises those traveling for Christmas to consider altering or delaying their travel plans if possible.
Hazardous travel conditions are more likely to occur in open, rural areas. The National Weather Service also says the high winds could knock out power.
