There are times when our ever-advancing technologies feel like they're taking over our lives, and many are annoyed, frightened, or just a bit freaked out by it all. However, if you ever needed proof that modern technology can make the world a better place, you might find it in the skies above the northwest suburbs of Chicago.

A recent rescue involving a missing dog shows just how powerful a combination of technology, volunteers, and determination can be.

The story centers on a Labradoodle named Mia who disappeared during a walk at the sprawling Glacial Park Conservation Area in McHenry County. The park covers roughly 3,400 acres, which makes finding a frightened dog an extremely difficult task. But Mia’s owners didn’t give up. They reached out to volunteers and search specialists who brought in a tool that’s becoming increasingly important in pet rescues: drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras.

It's Nice To Know There Are People Like This Standing By To Help

Among those helping in the search was drone pilot Michael Smith, founder of the Illinois-based drone company SmithicAir, along with volunteers from Best Furry Friend Search and Rescue. Using a drone equipped with heat-sensing technology, Smith was able to scan the massive park from the air and eventually spot Mia’s heat signature hidden in the landscape.

Thermal drones allow operators to detect body heat from above, making it possible to locate animals hiding in tall grass, dense woods, or brush that might otherwise be impossible to see from the ground.

In Mia’s case, the drone actually spotted her early in the search. But rescuing her wasn’t easy. Experts say that when dogs go missing for extended periods, they often enter what rescuers call “survival mode,” meaning they become extremely wary of people, even their own owners.

It Took Some Time, But Mia Was Finally Rescued

After more than two weeks on her own, Mia was finally safely captured using a humane trap and reunited with her family. Remarkably, she was still in good health despite the long ordeal.

And this isn’t the first time this kind of technology has saved the day here in Illinois.

Last year in Crystal Lake, a Bernese Mountain Dog named Charlie was found after a week-long search when a thermal drone operated by SmithicAir helped detect his heat signature hiding in tall grass not far from home. The discovery led to an emotional reunion with his owners after days of uncertainty.

Smithic Air was also instrumental in the finding of a missing puppy in Hoffman Estates in January.
