650,000 Water Bottles Distributed In Illinois, Wisconsin Recalled
Another day, another product recall that will have you looking in your fridge or pantry.
Hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles of drinking water have been pulled from shelves in Illinois and Wisconsin after federal health officials flagged them for being bottled under “insanitary conditions.” I know, I always thought if was "un" sanitary, not "in."
According to a recent enforcement report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), 651,148 plastic bottles produced by Wisconsin‑based Valley Springs Artesian Gold, LLC were part of the recall first issued on February 6th, and later upgraded to a Class II recall on February 26th. A Class II recall means the products "may cause temporary or medically reversible health issues" if consumed.
This particular recall covers six different Valley Springs products, including several sizes of 100 percent natural bottled water, distilled water, fluoride‑enhanced water, water labeled for infants, and even a line branded as “Daisy’s Doggy Water.” The products were distributed exclusively in Illinois and Wisconsin retail outlets.
Let's Get To What You Should Be Looking For At Home
Illinois and Wisconsin consumers who have any of these recalled water bottles are advised not to drink the water and to dispose of them or return them to the point of purchase for a full refund. Retailers are cooperating with the recall, and the FDA has made these detailed lot codes available for identifying affected products:
Affected products and UPC codes:
Valley Springs 100% Natural Artesian Water: 16.9oz bottles (UPC: 084317050010)
Valley Springs Distilled Water: 1 gallon jugs (UPC: 084317050027)
Valley Springs Fluoride Water: 16.9oz bottles (UPC: 084317050044)
Valley Springs Purified Water for Infants: 1 Liter bottles (UPC: 084317050051)
Valley Springs Daisy’s Doggy Water: 16.9oz bottles (UPC: 084317050068)
Valley Springs Purified Water: 500 ml bottles (UPC: 084317050075)
Keep in mind that any time we're dealing with a water recall, there are a lot of consumers out there being affected. A 2024 survey found that roughly 88% of American adults report consuming bottled water, and it consistently ranks as the most popular packaged drink ahead of pop and coffee. In addition, bottled water sales in the US topped 15.9 billion gallons in 2023, just to give you an idea of how widespread bottled water use has become.
