Robocall Complaints Surge In Illinois: Here’s The Latest Data
Even with more extensive tools to block unwanted calls, Illinois residents continue to deal with an overload of robocalls and other unsolicited telemarketing calls, and the latest federal data shows the problem remains stubbornly persistent.
According to the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) National Do Not Call Registry Data Book for Fiscal Year 2025, the FTC received more than 2.6 million Do Not Call complaints nationwide, and most of those involved prerecorded telemarketing calls known as robocalls.
Illinois continues to rank near the top of the list. Of all states, Illinois had about 943 Do Not Call complaints per 100,000 residents in 2025, which puts us fourth in the nation for complaint rates. Only Arizona, Tennessee and Nevada reported higher complaint rates per capita.
Let's Take A Look At Some Of Those Numbers
According to the FTC, more than 258 million phone numbers are actively registered with the National Do Not Call Registry, an increase of nearly 5 million from the previous year. Despite that, 2.6 million complaints were filed with the FTC in 2025 by consumers reporting unwanted calls.
Here in Illinois, residents filed roughly 943 complaints per 100,000 people, one of the highest rates in the entire country.
Across the country, here's what the FTC says people are complaining about most:
Debt reduction or relief calls
Imposter scams (calls pretending to be from the government, businesses, or familiar services)
Medical and prescription calls
Energy, solar and utility pitches
Home improvement or cleaning service calls
It may not seem like it, but even though robocall complaints ticked up slightly in 2025 compared to recent years, overall complaint levels remain well below their peak levels from earlier in the decade, which may be evidence that some of the FTC’s enforcement and industry efforts are having an effect.
Maybe You've Already Added Your Name To The Do Not Call List, But You're Still Getting The Robocalls
As you've probably figured out, registration on the Do Not Call list should reduce the number of legitimate telemarketing calls, but it doesn’t stop calls like scammers ignoring the law, spoofed calls that fake local phone numbers, or calls from overseas or unregulated callers.
If you haven't already, here are some things to do:
Register your number at DoNotCall.gov (it’s free).
Use your phone carrier’s spam filtering tools.
Report unwanted calls to the FTC when they happen.
