Illinois Is One of America’s Most Anti-Valentine’s States (We’re Fine, Really)
A new report from Hard Rock Bet set out to find which states are the most anti-Valentine’s Day… and Illinois did not exactly send flowers.
We ranked #4 in the country for Valentine’s negativity. Not number one (congrats, California), but high enough to make it awkward at dinner.
Why Illinois Is Side-Eyeing Valentine’s Day

The ranking looked at four factors: divorce lawyers, percentage of unmarried residents, negative social media sentiment, and Google searches for anti-Valentine’s terms.
Illinois logged:
- 13,740 monthly Google searches for things like “how to break up with my partner”
- 1,539 divorce lawyers statewide
- 53.4% of residents unmarried
- 42% negative Valentine’s social posts
Forty-two percent. That’s not heartbreak, that’s a vibe.
The States That Beat Us
The top three most anti-Valentine’s states:
- California
- New York
- Florida
Apparently, sunshine and palm trees do not guarantee romance.

Midwest Energy: Not Bitter, Just Practical
Look, I’m happily married. I enjoy a nice dinner and overpriced chocolate like anyone else. But I also understand the collective Midwest shrug toward prix fixe menus and forced romance.
Illinois isn’t anti-love. We’re just… realistic.
And maybe Googling “relationship red flags” 13,740 times a month.
