Some teachers explain the textbook. Others help students write their own future. This week’s 97ZOK Teacher of the Week is being celebrated not just for what he teaches in the classroom, but for how he encourages students to think bigger than the assignment in front of them. He opens his classroom before school, after school, and anytime a student needs direction, proving that education isn’t just about notes at 9 a.m…. It’s about building confidence, ambition, and belief in what’s possible.

Mr Wessel is such a great teacher, but he's so much more to me than just a teacher. He lets me go into his room everyday. Before school, after school, even during school. He always has advice for me. Even on my long days, he looks past the class and sees me as a person. I think Mr. Wessel should be teacher of the week because he does so much more than just teach us the subject.

He teaches us how to care for and respect everybody at all times. He also really advocates for his students and helps them achieve their goals. Like when I wanted to start my own business, he was ready to dive head in with me. Although he teaches more than he is asked of, the stuff he is asked to teach he does it with perfection and care. He understands not every student wants to be writing notes or making business decisions at 9 in the morning. But he takes the time to help them.

He deserves teacher of the week because he guides students through the subject, and life.

As Teacher of the Week, Rich was surprised with a cake from Nothing Bundt Cakes, money to spend at WM Day Spa Salon, and lunch courtesy of Redd Insurance Group.

According to a famous quote frequently attributed to Mark Twain, the two most important days in a person's life are the day you are born, and the day you find out why. For the last 7 years, Byron High School students have been blessed that their classroom is right where Mr. Wessel (AKA Wes-Dog) was meant to be. I sure enjoyed my conversation, which you can listen to below, about what he is trying to accomplish with his students. I'm a fan!
