Rock River Elementary School in Rockford, Illinois permanently closed in 2005, and the state it is in today is nothing short of nightmarish.

Memories of Rock River Elementary School in Rockford

Growing up in Rockford I did not attend Rock River Elementary School at 2729 Kishwaukee Street, but my mom taught there for 13 years and I spent a lot of time within the walls of the school as a child.

As an elementary school student myself, I did NOT like visiting Rock River with my mom because it was OLD and SCARY, (her classroom was in the old/original part of the school), and that was well over 30 years ago!

The hallways and classrooms were dark, the rooms were cold, the building made weird noises, and some people even say it was haunted!

My mother never experienced anything paranormal at Rock River and she has many positive memories from the years she spent there, but I guarantee she will be sickened when she sees what the inside of the school looks like today.

What the Inside of Rock River Elementary School Looks Like Today

Around 3 weeks ago this video was posted on YouTube, and after watching it I can't help but wonder; why the heck is the safety hazard of a school STILL standing?!?

Why Is Rock River Elementary School in Rockford Still Standing?

I think we can all agree that the current state of Rock River Elementary School is not only an extreme safety hazard but a horrible eyesore for our city as well, so...why hasn't it been demolished yet?

The Rockford Public School District has taken down several old schools like White Swan, Cherry Valley, Thompson and more in the last 10 years, so why is Rock River still standing nearly 20 years after closing?

According to my mom, the answer is simple; RPS 205 no longer owns the building and hasn't for quite some time.

So, the eyesore is someone else's problem to take care, but will they ever do it? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
