Impaired Boating In Illinois: Risks Of Alcohol-Related Accidents On Waterways
The Illinois Liquor Control Commission is reminding boaters and anyone else recreating on waterways around the state to avoid getting a BUI.
Rivers and lakes are not just spots for relaxation and recreation; they can also turn perilous when boating and alcohol mix.
Rising Concern for Boaters on Illinois Waterways
The Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) is sounding the alarm about the risks associated with Boating Under the Influence (BUI) while emphasizing the need for responsible behavior on the water.
Like drinking and driving, Boating Under the Influence (BUI) of alcohol can impair operator and passenger safety. Alcohol can damage operator judgment, reflexes, depth perception, and coordination abilities. -ILCC Executive Director Lisa Gardner
Statistics Paint a Grim Picture
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) reported a sobering statistic from 2023: 70 boating accidents and 72 arrests for BUI. Two fatalities linked to BUI incidents last year, according to the press release.
These figures spotlight an urgent need for boaters to be aware of dangers when alcohol is involved.
Legal and Safety Recommendations
In Illinois, operating a boat with a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.08% or higher, or under the influence of drugs, is illegal. To avoid accidents and ensure safety on the water, the ILCC advises against drinking while operating a boat.
For those looking to enjoy alcohol while cruising, the ILCC suggests designating a sober operator before setting out or utilizing the services of professional boat operators available throughout the state.
