This April, the Rockford IceHogs will be honoring one of the most legendary hockey teams in local history, the Rockford Icemen, but why did this special ice dynasty end?

Rockford Hockey Family

Growing up in Rockford, I took dance lessons, did theater, and was on my high school's pom squad. My brother played hockey...from age five through senior year.

I spent many weekends with my family at ice rinks all over Illinois, Wisconsin, and beyond watching my brother play hockey for the Rockford Hockey Club, and when he started high school he played for the Rockford Icemen.

My family's days of spending every weekend at the ice rink may be over, but the memory of Rockford Icemen games lives on, and soon the Rockford IceHogs will be honoring it in a big way:

My brother is not featured in any of the Icemen photos above, but several of my old classmates and friends are. This special IceHogs jersey auction will benefit so many young kids with big hockey dreams in the Rockford area. Please grab game tickets here.

Why Did the Rockford Icemen End?

The Rockford Icemen were a powerhouse in Illinois high school hockey from 1998-2016, but faced many challenges in the team's final years...basically because they were too good.

The Icemen were a combined high school team, primarily because no Rockford area high school had enough players to form one school team. As the Icemen championship titles continued to stack up, the league rules started changing.

Longtime Icemen Head Coach Tim Mattila told WTVO in 2016:

When I started in ’91 we had eight schools. As we started to win and become successful they started taking schools away from us. That’s just a fact.

Having only a few schools that they were allowed to draw players from, Icemen player numbers dwindled, until the team officially ended in 2018.

Over the next several years, high school hockey players had to look for other teams outside of Rockford to play for. ln 2024, the Belvidere Fury and the Rockford Hockey Club teamed up to form the Rockford Area High School Hockey Program, and the Rockford Lightning were born.

A 2024 WREX article says:

The initiative was approved by the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois earlier this week and aims to ensure that all players who start their hockey journey in Rockford can continue to play together under a single banner, regardless of school affiliation. The group has named its team the Rockford Lightning, in honor of the city's sports legacy.

My nephew is a jsunior and currently plays for the Rockford Lightning, and they are doing an awesome job of following the Icemen's championship-winning footsteps.

I guess the moral of this story is: Hockey greatness is still alive and thriving in the Rockford area, and your support of the IceHog's Icemen Jersey Auction will help ensure its success for many years to come.
