If you’re looking for a family getaway but aren’t interested in paying tons of money for expensive airline tickets or driving halfway across the U.S., there’s a place not far from Rockford that has been named among the best vacation spots in America.

U.S. News & World Report just dropped its list of the 18 Best Family Vacation Spots in the U.S. for 2026. No shocker here, Orlando, Florida, grabbed the number one spot. After that, it’s Yellowstone, Washington D.C., Anaheim-Disneyland, and Yosemite to finish out the top five.

I’ll be honest, I haven’t been to any of those top five. Maybe it’s just me, or maybe it’s because my family never really did the whole long road trip or cross-country flight thing growing up.

U.S. News & World Report:

Known as "The Water Park Capital of the World," Wisconsin Dells makes for a great family vacation spot with plenty of things to do. Take your pick of splash-filled venues, from Noah's Ark Waterpark, the largest outdoor water park in the country, to Wilderness Resort, which boasts four indoor and four outdoor water parks. When you need a break on dry land, attend a Rick Wilcox Magic Show, feed deer and other wildlife at Wisconsin Deer Park, or admire the Dells' natural beauty from the Scenic River Walk.

Wisconsin Dells Ranks 8th Best Family Vacation Spot in America

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been to Wisconsin Dells. Sometimes it was just for a quick day trip, other times we’d stay for a whole week. It’s always been on my family’s list, and I’m guessing that’s a big reason why it landed so high on the rankings.

It’s the kind of place Chicagoans go on family vacation, or people from neighboring states go just to check out Noah’s Ark, an awesome waterpark you should probably visit if you haven’t, or stay at one of their resorts like the Wilderness or Great Wolf and enjoy the indoor waterparks.

Why Wisconsin Dells Should Be on Every Midwest Family's Vacation List

So if you’re already thinking 2026 is a bust because the budget’s tight, don’t count yourself out just yet. Wisconsin Dells might be exactly what you need.
