Leech Lake Has Zebra Mussels

Walker, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says it appears the zebra mussel has invaded another major Minnesota Lake.

Officials have confirmed zebra mussel larvae in two locations in Leech Lake. Although no adult zebra mussels were found in the Cass County lake, the location and number of the larvae suggest a reproducing population may be present. The DNR notes the locations where the zero mussel larvae were found are almost 17 miles apart on the 110,000 acre lake.

The state now plans to work with Leech Lake tribal officials and local property owners to conduct a broader search for the invasive species and discuss options for containing its spread.
