The Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Illinois acknowledges the likely prehistoric origins. It's a fascinating area a few miles west of Collinsville, Illinois, but who built it?

Who are the "moon-eyed people"?

This mysterious tribe of "moon-eyed" beings was mentioned by the Cherokee and also by European settlers. The name comes from legends that claimed these light-skinned and white-haired people had eyes that were sensitive to light so they would mainly be seen at night.

This isn't an urban legend, but a real historic people with "an account by early Tennessee governor, John Sevier" as shared on Wikipedia. They lived in the Appalachian mountains, but were eventually expelled in a brutal war with the Cherokee people. It was then that the "moon-eyed people" moved west and that's where the Cahokia Mounds enters the picture.

The claim is that they organized and built these mounds before they disappeared. There are statues in an eastern US museum of a monument created to these beings.

Is it possible that this strange tribe existed before the Cherokee and Columbian discovery of America? Could it be that they were responsible for one of the most historic grounds in Illinois? We know the "moon-eyed people" existed as there are also accounts in Ohio and other parts of the country. More people now believe that southern Illinois was their last home before they mysteriously vanished forever.
