Man Arrested After Mom Unknowingly Took His Pot Brownies To Senior Center
A group of senior citizens had a more than good time after a 73-year-old South Dakota woman brought some brownies to the senior center for a card game. All she knew was that she brought some brownies from home that her son had made.
According to a probable cause affidavit, police dispatchers were called to the Tabor Senior Center for “possible poisonings” of those who participated in a card game that day.
Tabor is a small town of a few hundred about 85 miles southwest of Sioux Falls.
“An investigation into the incident lead me to believe that the patients were all under the influence of THC from a batch of brownies that were brought to the Community Center by Irene Koranda,” Deputy Sheriff Joel Neuman wrote in his report.
A couple who were at the weekly Tuesday night card game told officers that “after several people had eaten the brownies, including themselves,” they quickly learned that Irene's son, Michael, “had made the brownies and had been in Colorado over the past weekend and brought back products with marijuana.”
During the police interview, Irene told officers that 46-year-old Michael “baked a pan of brownies and she took them to the Community Center card game." She was unaware that the baked goods contained THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis.
After speaking with officers, they said Irene “willingly gave [the sheriff] the remainder of the brownies in a plastic container," according to Neuman's report.
Michael, an elementary school music teacher, told deputies that he made the brownies with some THC butter he had brought home from Colorado.
After he baked the brownies, he said he went to bed, and his mom unknowingly saw the brownies and took them to the card game.
Michael Koranda was arrested for possession of a controlled drug or substance, a felony carrying a maximum sentence of five years in prison, and a $10,000 fine.
Koranda posted his $3000 bail, and has a January 25th court appearance.
