Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) -- Minnesota Vikings player Marcus Sherels will be among those jumping into the frigid water at Foster Arend Park this weekend for the annual Rochester Polar Plunge.

Organizers of the event say the John Marshall High School graduate and former Minnesota Gopher football player will take the plunge with members of the Rochester Flyers Plunge group to help raise money for Special Olympics Minnesota.

The Rochester Plunge begins at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Participants can check in starting at 10:30 Saturday morning at Foster Arend Park. They also have the option of checking in early on Friday from 3 until 7 p.m. while groups of “Super Plungers” start their marathon of plunging into the pond.

Last year, over 850 people took the Plunge in Rochester and raised about $211,000 in support of Special Olympics Minnesota. Olmsted County Sheriff Kevin Torgerson has been heavily involved in the Rochester Polar Plunge since the start and in the YouTube video at the top of this post he explains how the money raised through the event is used by Special Olympics Minnesota.
