Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - The University of Minnesota issued a statement Wednesday afternoon indicating Gophers Linebackers Coach Mike Sherels was admitted to a hospital Tuesday for an unexpected surgery.

It was also disclosed that Sherels had undergone an unspecified medical procedure last week, just before the start of the Gopher football team’s fall camp.

“Mike is Minnesota football,” said head coach Tracy Claeys. “There are few things that are more important to him than this university and this football program. We ask that you respect his privacy and that of his family during this time.”

Sherels and his younger brother, Minnesota Vikings kick returner Marcus Sherels, are from Rochester and both are graduates of John Marshall High School.

Mike played for the Gophers from 2003 through 2007, and served as team captain during his junior and senior year. Sherels graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2007 and earned a Master’s degree from the U of M in 2014.
