MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A 24-year-old man has been convicted for killing a 17-year-old seven years ago in Minneapolis.

Tarius Gresham admitted this month to killing 17-year-old Sterling Horton in 2006 near North High School in Minneapolis.

Court records say Gresham told police he pulled a gun on Horton during a fight, shot him and then ran away on July 25, 2006.

Chief Deputy Hennepin County Attorney David Brown says Gresham was facing a rape charge from 2012, when he confessed to the Horton murder.

Before accepting his confession, Brown says authorities verified his claim.

He was sentenced to 15 years in prison Thursday, which includes time for the Horton murder and the rape conviction.

Horton's mother, Doris Young, says she's happy Gresham will be punished.
