MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota quarterback Phillip Nelson is transferring to Rutgers.

Nelson's father, Pat Nelson, told the Star Tribune in Minneapolis on Wednesday that his son has decided to attend Rutgers after also considering Kansas State.

Rutgers could not comment because the move had not yet become official. Nelson visited the Scarlet Knights' campus in Piscataway, N.J., on Sunday.

Phillip Nelson plans to enroll in class Friday and will have to sit out a year as required by NCAA rules.

He will have two years of eligibility left. Rutgers is moving into the Big Ten next season.

Nelson started 16 games for the Gophers in two seasons. He threw for 2,179 yards and 17 touchdowns and rushed for 548 yards and six TDs.
