Northern Minnesota Tribal Official Killed
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Red Lake police say a woman is in custody after the death of a tribal council member who was shot over the weekend.
Red Lake Public Safety Director William Brunelle says in a statement Wednesday that 58-year-old Donald May died of a gunshot wound.
Authorities were called to a residence in rural Red Lake about 7:40 p.m. Saturday on a report of a shooting. They arrived to find May dead.
A 47-year-old woman at the residence was arrested and faces charges of domestic violence, third-degree assault and disorderly conduct.
Tribal police and the FBI are investigating the shooting.
Red Lake Chairman Floyd Jourdain Jr. says May's death is a "huge blow to our community." He says there are unanswered questions, but there's no indication the shooting was politically motivated.
