Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson reached a plea agreement today relating to charges he abused his 4-year-old son. Peterson was in court in Montgomery County, Texas.

Photos surfaced back in September showing the boy with several cuts, marks and bruises on his thighs and buttocks. Peterson admitted to striking his son with a wooden switch, similar to the way he had been disciplined as a child.

Under the terms of the agreement, Peterson has pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of reckless assault. He has been fined $4,000 and given 80 hours of community service.

Had Peterson been convicted of a felony child abuse charge, he could have faced a jail sentence of up to 2 years and a fine of as much as $10,000.

After the hearing, Peterson took full responsibility for the incident and expressed regret that it had ever happened. He also said that he was looking forward to putting the incident behind him and focusing on improving his relationship with his son.

The big question now is when Peterson might be back in a Vikings uniform. At this point, the team has not made any statements as to when, or if, that will happen.
