Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester Police Department is warning that citizens have reported receiving calls identified as coming from the department's non-emergency number (507-328-6800) that are the work of apparent scammers.

A social media post says the callers claim to be from the Rochester Police Department and sometimes identify themselves as the police chief. They request sensitive personal information by claiming the recipient of the call is the victim of some sort of crime or is facing an arrest warrant for unpaid parking tickets. In addition to the requests for personal information, the scammers might also ask the victim to purchase gift cards to pay for warrants.

The Police Department warns you should never give unsolicited callers bank, credit card, or Social Security numbers and stress police were never called to ask for that type of information.
