Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A northeast Rochester neighborhood will soon see a street change that was being sought by residents as a way to cut down on speeders and eliminate a shortcut for motorists.

The Rochester City Council Monday approved a plan to close East River Rd between East River Ln and 23rd St.

Known as Option 3, it was “heavily favored” by neighbors. The construction cost is estimated at $5,000.

When finished, it “will eliminate cut-through traffic” in the neighborhood.

Neighbors filed a petition with the city that “included concerns over cut-through traffic, vehicle speeds, poor sight lines and safety of pedestrians and cyclists due to the lack of sidewalks in the area.”

The city conducted a traffic study in 2019 that “confirmed high levels of traffic use this route as a shortcut between Broadway Avenue North and 37th St. The study also confirmed that many of these vehicles are exceeding the posted speed limit.”
