Officials said that firefighters discovered a fire in the basement spread quickly, compromising floors and stairways and making entry into the home dangerous. Crews were able to remove the cat from the home's main floor. Life-saving efforts were made with equipment specifically for feline patients but were unsuccessful.

Crews remained on scene throughout the night controlling hot spots within the building. Authorities said that the sustained operations and cold temperatures required a rotation of fire crews including off-duty personnel, who were called in to augment the on-duty force.
