Forget about having these personalized license plates on your vehicle here in Minnesota, because they’ve been declared illegal!
If you own a motor vehicle and you live here in Minnesota, you have several choices when it comes to choosing license plates. According to the state of Minnesota Department of Public Safety (MDPS) Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) website, there are 15 different classes of license plates available, from commercial to motorcycle, dealer to limousine, and more.
Then, there are 11 different license plate options under the specialized plate category, including special plates for Collector, Critical Habitat, State Parks and Trails, and more. And, of course, you can also personalize your OWN license plates here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes too.
But, you CAN NOT use the following 39 personalized plates. Because they’re illegal here in the Bold North. In fact, there are probably even MORE than 39 possible personalized license plates that would not be approved if you submitted an application for them (like, say, if they contain a naughty word.)
This CBS-Minnesota story quoted Minnesota Department of Public Safety communications director Bruce Gordon, who explained what is off-limits when it comes to personalized license plates:
“The law says that any license plate that would offend the public morals or decency is not acceptable,” Gordon noted in the story.
However, the following license plates actually WERE actually issued by the MDPS-DVS. But they were then revoked when the state did a comprehensive review of nearly 100,000 personalized license plates after a plate with a questionable phrase went viral nearly 6 years ago.
