Rochester Finds Store’s Strange Work Ethic Sign Uncommonly Annoying
The Rochester UPS store near Cub Foods has some staffing issues. And it seems people without a work ethic are to blame. And maybe for the first time, it seems that's annoyed more people than usual.
I saw the sign first in Spotted In Rochester, so I drove over to the store, between a 'coming soon' coffee shop and Little Caesars Pizza Shop on Highway 14, to check it out for myself. That's the first rule of journalism these days, "Don't trust the Facebooks, find out for yourself!"
What's the SIgn Say?
Due to next to zero staffing, this location will be operating under limited hours. We will be open Monday thru Friday from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM and open Saturdays from 10 AM to 3:30 PM. We apologize for the huge inconvenience this causes you while we try to find people with a work ethic. The Downtown UPS Store will be open Monday thru Friday 9 AM to 7:30 PM.
The UPS Store (small) Team.
Does the sign bother you? It did on Spotted in Rochester, with two basic arguments.
a) It's the employees' fault.
ii) It's the employer's fault.
3) And sometimes, it's this...which is a pretty clever response.
The Problem Is Likely Way More Complicated
"Pay people more to get better employees." I believe that's true and can solve a lot of problems. But sometimes, all the money in the world won't make a job great if other things are wrong, management, location, etc.
Speaking of location, we have a big affordable housing issue in Rochester. $15/hour for part-time work might sound great, but not if you have to drive in from Preston to do it just so you can find a place you can afford. That has to be a part of it, too, right?

I love a good Cocktail Lounge. Please, someone, open about ten of them and I'll promise to come by one of them each week.
