Marcus Sherels' return to the Minnesota Vikings proved to be brief.

The team this afternoon announced the release of the Rochester John Marshall High School football standout and Golden Gophers star player.

Sherels, who played 9 seasons for the Vikings and set team records for punt return yardage and punt return touchdowns before his release last year, was brought back three weeks ago following an injury to wide receiver Chad Beebe.

Reports indicate cornerback Mike Hughes, who returned punts for the Vikings on Sunday, has taken over Sherel's job.
