Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A woman was taken to the hospital Thursday evening after a fire broke out in a southwest Rochester apartment, right across the street from a fire department station.

Residents were evacuating when Rochester Fire Dept. crews arrived. They traced smoke to a second-floor unit and discovered the door was locked. RFD says firefighters forced the door open and encountered heavy smoke - and then the woman: “A victim was located just inside the door. Crews pulled the victim from the apartment and carried her to the ground floor.” She was then taken to St. Mary’s Hospital by ambulance.

As of late Thursday night, RFD did not have any information on the victim’s condition.

Firefighters located flames in the kitchen, as well as two activated sprinkler heads in the living room. Firefighters extinguished the flames and then opened up the ceiling and determined there was no fire extension.

RFD says there was significant damage from smoke, fire, and water to the apartment. There was also some water damage to the unit below the apartment.

RFD says the sprinkler system was activated by the fire and helped keep the flames in check until firefighters could arrive. No word yet on the cause of the fire.
