Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The delayed reconstruction of a section of North Broadway in Rochester may finally be getting back on track.

The City Council Wednesday authorized staff to seek construction bids for the project, which has an estimated overall cost of over $19-million.

The council rejected bids for the project last year after they came in $5-million higher than estimated.

The council was told Wednesday the project team “modified the construction plans to provide a revised staging sequence, with an anticipated timeline that will reduce the project schedule and overall impacts to the businesses and traveling public by nearly one year.”

The team also removed planned artwork, ornamental fencing, and large, decorative signs at bus stops in the project zone. The changes resulted in projected savings of $3.6-million.

The council was told staff held a meeting with neighbors and businesses in the construction zone last month and heard a desire to begin work this year.

The work will affect the section of Broadway between Civic Center Dr on the south and Silver Lake on the north.
