Rochester Planning Commission Chair Announces Bid for Council President

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- The Chair of Rochester’s Planning and Zoning Commission has thrown his hat into the ring to be the next Rochester City Council President.

The post is currently held by Brooke Carlson, who won the seat in 2020. She announced last month that she does not plan to seek a second term as council president. 

On Thursday morning Randy Schubring announced his bid for City Council President. 

Rochester has a strong legacy of innovation, resilience, and community spirit. We must leverage this remarkable legacy as we embrace the current growth and ensure our city is a place where everyone can thrive. In light of the rapid growth we are seeing in Rochester, we need to ensure that we are smart about our growth, keep an eye on our neighborhoods and focus on lifting all Rochester residents to succeed.

In addition to chairing the city’s planning commission, Schubring has also served as the Rochester Neighborhood Association Leader and is the governor’s appointee to the Metropolitan Airports Commission. 

Schubring is also a board member for the United Way of Olmsted County.

Schubring's announcement says his campaign will focus on, “access to affordable housing, promoting vibrant and safe neighborhoods, while leveraging the Mayo Clinic investment to bring more diversity to the city’s economy.” 

The campaign announcement also states that Schubring has taken a leave of absence from his role as Community Relations Director at Mayo Clinic and that intends to resign from the position if he wins the City Council President seat in November. 

Schubring also sent a letter announcing his campaign to the community. The letter closes by asking members of the Rochester community to share their thoughts and concerns about the city’s future by contacting him via email at neighborsforrandy@gmail.com or calling and or texting 507-271-1233. 

Last month Rochester City Councilmember Shaun Palmer announced his bid to seek the City Council President seat. Election Day 2024 is Nov. 5.
