Man Spots His Stolen Truck on Side of Rochester Area Highway
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- An Oronoco man reported his truck stolen after spotting it on the side of Hwy. 14 west of Rochester Friday afternoon.
Olmsted County Sheriff’s Captain James Schueller said the truck’s owner called 911 after seeing his vehicle on the shoulder of westbound Hwy. 14 at County Rd. 3 while he was traveling in the opposite direction around 12:40 p.m. Responding deputies boxed the vehicle in and learned the suspect, identified as 41-year-old Merrick Jervis of Stewartville, had allegedly broken the truck’s steering column and had tampered with the ignition to start the vehicle.
Later that evening deputies were called to the truck owner’s residence in Oronoco where he reported damage to his garage door and a Ford Bronco unfamiliar to him parked on his property. Schueller said responding deputies determined that Jervis had used the Bronco to ram open the garage door but appeared to be unsuccessful at getting inside the garage.
The truck owner said his truck that was reported stolen was parked in the driveway and investigators are unsure why Jervis attempted to ram his way into the garage, Schueller said. The damage to the garage was estimated to be $5,500 while the damage toll to the truck ranges from $1,000 to $6,000.
Jervis was booked into the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center on charges of possession of stolen property and damage to property. Court records indicate Jervis has a criminal history that dates back to 2000 with at least six felony convictions in four different southeast Minnesota counties.
The convictions include first-degree burglary in Fillmore and Olmsted Counties, motor vehicle theft in Mower County, fleeing in Olmsted and Wabasha Counties and check forgery in Wabasha county.
