to $9.4 billion and net operating income shot up 50 percent to more than $600 million, about the same as in 2011. Expenses last year grew by 4.3 percent to $8.8 billion. Mayo’s finances were helped in part by a return of 14 ½ percent on its investments and about $400 million from benefactors

By the end of 2013, Mayo’s number of Rochester employees slipped by more than 1,000 from the previous year to 33,179 ( 2012 total was 34,233 ) , which is nearly the same level as in 2011. The number of Minnesota Mayo employees fell by about 800 workers to 40,600.

Mayo describes its results as “ solid “ and notes its $260 million contribution to its pension plan has left it fully funded. The report shows Mayo’s overall operations reached 63 million people last year, compared to 20 million in 2011. Of that total, 1.2 million were patients who actually visited a Mayo site. Another 7 million were patients at one of the members of the growing Mayo Clinic Care Network.

Mayo also had another major accomplishment last year - approval by the state of its Destination Medical Center initiative, which will help guide its growth in Minnesota over the next 20 years.
